Business Communicator of the Year

IABC/Pittsburgh is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Business Communicator of the Year award. Read on for more information about the award and the nomination process. Submissions are due before July 30, 2012.
The IABC/Pittsburgh Business Communicator of the Year award recognizes an individual for outstanding contributions in practicing, promoting, and/or enhancing professional business communications in the Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Previous winners include:
- Robert Hill, vice chancellor for public affairs at the University of Pittsburgh
- Debora S. Foster, vice president of corporate communication of H.J. Heinz Company
- Rose Gabbianelli, senior vice president & director of corporate affairs for Mellon Financial Corporation
- Greg Babe, CEO of Bayer MaterialScience
- Robert O’Gara, educator at Point Park University
- Michael L. Koff, senior manager for corporate communications & government affairs (retired) of Sony Electronics Inc.
- Dr. Carol Utay, co-founder and executive director of Total Learning Centers, Inc.
- Katie McSorley, president, Mid-Atlantic, Euro RSCG Worldwide PR
Candidates for this honor are:
- professional business communicators who inspire, establish or support the highest standards of quality and innovation in organizational communication; or
- organizational leaders (profit or nonprofit) who foster communication excellence by initiating, directing, supporting or sustaining outstanding and effective communication programs.
Criteria
Business Communicator of the Year nominees are evaluated on the following points:
1. Skills: Demonstration of exceptional leadership, management and communication skills
2. Diverse communications audience: Experience and involvement in communication to diverse audiences – internal and external at local, national and international levels (as applicable)
3. Strategy: Use of a communication strategy that demonstrates creativity and innovation and contributes to the business success of the organization
4. Personal communication: Effective personal communication with all audiences; i.e., he/she must be shown to participate in communication, not simply to direct the communication staff in their efforts
5. Ethics and professionalism in communication: Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards
6. Sharing expertise: Enables and encourages growth of communications profession through sponsorship of internships and mentoring in the work place; contributes communications skills in volunteer settings
