Why Be an IABC Judge?
For Sheila Holt, Senior Communications Specialist at Westinghouse Electric Company, the answer is simple: You give and you get.
“A few times a year, I agree to judge entries of other IABC chapter awards programs. I do this because of the positive exchanges that take place as a result: IABC on the whole, and our Pittsburgh Chapter, benefit by getting one of its members more directly involved. On a more personal level, the donation of my time to IABC benefits me professionally by:
- expanding my communications network;
- providing me with the chance to use and improve my communications skills; and
- allowing me the chance to learn from my peers.
All of this helps me to become a better communicator.
Like so many, my time is precious, and I spend it wisely. The Pittsburgh IABC chapter ensures that the voluntary awards judging process is stress-free. Materials are mailed directly to me. I am provided with explicit directions and follow-up communication. I determine when I do the actual reviewing and judging of the awards. Once completed, I send the materials on to the next judge or back to the coordinator. In total, the process it takes about four hours of my time — about three hours to actually review and judge the entries, and another hour to peer check with my partner judge and to communicate with the judging coordinator. There is no travel involved. I do not have to give up half of my weekend to participate. I can review the awards in the comfort of my home. And I am exposed to some great communications pieces!
Try it once. There is no easier way become involved—and get something meaningful in return.”
